A new 50 MW battery energy storage farm is set to be built at Middlerigg Farm, between Bathgate and Armadale in West Lothian, after unanimous approval from the local council.
The site—with nearly 50 MW capacity—will feature multiple large battery containers alongside transformers and a substation. It is designed to store electrical energy during periods of excess renewable generation, like wind or solar, and to discharge it during peak demand. While such systems enhance grid stability and help reduce energy costs, they often spark concerns about visual impact and fire safety.
Galileo’s project manager emphasises that this infrastructure plays a crucial role in shifting away from fossil fuels, contributing to climate change mitigation, and supporting Scotland’s net‑zero goals. The project will also include a community benefit fund focused on health, sports, training, and education, and create jobs during construction and operation.
Battery energy storage systems are becoming more common across the region. Earlier this year, West Lothian saw the approval of a 200 MW facility capable of powering around 240,000 homes for two hours, and a 100 MW project near Broxburn was also granted consent. These large‑scale installations are essential for integrating intermittent renewables into the grid, providing vital flexibility by supplying power when wind and solar outputs dip.
Although upfront costs and battery lifespan remain challenges, advocates stress that battery farms support grid security, help stabilise energy prices, and foster local economic growth. Galileo plans to work closely with West Lothian Council and communities as the project moves forward.
