Nigeria, Kano: The Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf distributed 500 electricity transformers to communities across the 44 Local Government Areas of the state on Sunday. This is part of efforts to improve rural electrification. Speaking during the flag-off ceremony at the premises of the Rural Electricity Board on Maganda Road, Yusuf said that the transformers, which included 500 KVA, 300 KVA, and 200 KVA units, were procured from reputable international manufacturers.
“This marks the first phase of the distribution of 500 units of various types of transformers across the 44 Local Government Areas. Today’s ceremony marks another milestone in fulfilling one of our campaign promises for the good people of Kano State, especially rural communities that have been deprived of access to electricity for quite a long time,” Yusuf said.
The project is being implemented in collaboration with the 44 local government councils. The transformers will be allocated based on the specific power needs of each community.
The governor also urged communities to take ownership of the infrastructure and safeguard the transformers from vandalism or theft, adding that proper maintenance is crucial for sustainability. He also disclosed that the state-owned electricity company has commenced the evacuation of power from the 10 MW Tiga Hydropower Generation Plant to boost energy supply in the state. Additional alternative energy projects will also be rolled out to ensure stable power supply across Kano, particularly to support the growth of small and medium-scale businesses.
