Canada, British Columbia, Vancouver: BC Hydro has announced a major upgrade to its Mount Pleasant Substation in Vancouver to meet rising electricity demand linked to population growth, new businesses and increased electrification along the Broadway corridor and nearby communities.

The project will expand the substation’s capacity to serve up to 50,000 additional customers once completed in early 2029.

As part of the $90 M investment, BC Hydro will install a third transformer in a space that was reserved for future expansion when the facility was built in 2014. Additional equipment will also be added to improve long-term reliability.

Adrian Dix, British Columbia’s Minister of Energy and Climate Solutions, said the investment supports the province’s long-term clean energy plans and ensures growing neighbourhoods, housing developments and transport projects such as the Broadway Subway project have reliable electricity supply.

Christine Boyle, MLA for Vancouver-Little Mountain, described the upgrade as a forward-looking investment that will strengthen reliability while supporting the city’s continued growth.

Most of the construction work will take place within the existing substation site, helping to limit disruption for local residents and businesses.

Charlotte Mitha, President and CEO of BC Hydro, said the project reflects years of planning, noting that the substation was originally designed with room for future expansion. She added that the additional capacity will help support homes, businesses and clean energy technologies in the years ahead.

The project forms part of BC Hydro’s wider programme of infrastructure investments across the province to support economic development, population growth and the transition to cleaner energy systems.
