Sweden, Malmberget: ABB has secured an order from mining company LKAB to supply medium- and low-voltage switchgear for a new sorting plant at Malmberget in northern Sweden.
The equipment will form the backbone of the plant’s electrical distribution system and will be integrated with LKAB’s existing ABB Ability System 800xA distributed control system.
The new facility forms part of LKAB’s long-term investment in its Malmberget operations. The sorting plant will separate iron ore from waste rock before further processing, with crude ore crushed and waste material removed ahead of subsequent production stages.
ABB said its electrification equipment is designed to support reliable power distribution and high operational availability at the new plant. The company will also provide local engineering expertise and lifecycle services.
Installation of the electrical systems is scheduled to begin in the second half of 2027, while the new sorting plant is expected to enter operation in the second quarter of 2028.
