Switzerland, Zürich: ABB has announced plans to invest around $200 M over the next three years to expand its medium-voltage manufacturing operations across Europe. The programme aims to increase production capacity, support grid modernisation and improve supply for customers upgrading power infrastructure.
The investment will help meet growing demand from utilities, industries and rapidly expanding data centre markets. ABB said the move will also speed up the transition towards next-generation power distribution technologies.
A major part of the programme includes a new $100 M facility in Dalmine, Italy, focused on producing air-insulated and SF6-free switchgear and breakers. Another $100 M will be used to expand factories in Bulgaria, Finland, Germany, Norway and Poland.
The projects will increase production of key technologies such as gas-insulated switchgear, vacuum interrupters and relays designed to improve grid reliability and resilience.
ABB Chief Executive Officer Morten Wierod said electricity demand continues to rise due to grid upgrades, renewable energy integration, data centre growth and the shift towards more sustainable technologies. He added that the investments would improve capacity, product availability and delivery times for customers in Europe and other markets.
The company is also continuing earlier investments in Hungary and the UK. In Hungary, ABB is adding research, development and production capabilities for connector technologies, while in Nottingham it has expanded manufacturing of earthing and lightning protection systems for critical infrastructure, data centres and transport networks.
