Finland: Renewable energy developer Aurinkokarhu and Futureal Energy Partners (FEP) have formed a joint venture to develop and finance approximately 3 GW of solar, battery storage and hybrid energy projects in Finland.

The portfolio is currently weighted towards battery energy storage systems (BESS), with around 2 GW under development. A further 1 GW is planned in solar capacity, alongside several hybrid projects combining solar generation and storage.

Around 1 GW of the total pipeline is expected to be ready for construction in 2026, with additional projects planned for 2027 and 2028.

Projects in the portfolio include the Åback Energy Storage facility in Tjöck, Kristinestad, and the Annis Energy Storage project in Jussila, Nykarleby.

The partners say the developments are intended to support electricity supply reliability and power-price stability in the Nordic market. The joint venture also provides a platform for expansion into other Nordic countries, with Sweden identified as the next market.

The first project financed through the partnership was a 124 MW battery storage facility in Tuovila, Toby, Korsholm, with the financing transaction completed in 2025.

Aurinkokarhu co-founder Staffan Asplund said the partnership would help move projects more quickly from development into construction while providing long-term commitment to host communities.

FEP is the energy business of European investment company Futureal Group.
