USA: Ayr Energy has launched from stealth as the first new US power grid equipment manufacturer in a generation, already securing over $250 M in contracted orders. The company positions itself as a full-stack provider of transformers, switchgear, and high-voltage circuit breakers, designed to meet surging demand for electricity across the United States and beyond.
Backed by investment firm General Catalyst, Ayr’s contracts represent more than 10 GW of new power capacity. Its offering includes power, distribution, and special-purpose transformers, plus medium- and high-voltage grid solutions.
CEO and co-founder Anirudh Reddy said: “We have reimagined how power grid equipment is built to meet modern needs and deliver proven, critical technologies through an unparalleled ownership experience.”
The need is urgent: of the 60 million transformers installed across the US, at least half are approaching end-of-life, while electrification, AI, and reindustrialisation could require another 120 million in the decades ahead. Lead times for new transformers now average 120 weeks, which is more than double 2021 levels.
Ayr promises faster delivery, improved reliability, and lifetime service through three pillars:
- Custom engineering with advanced modelling and direct client–engineer collaboration.
- Manufacturing & testing with ISO-certified facilities, full traceability, and compliance with UL, ANSI, and IEEE standards.
- Support & service including NETA-accredited partners, rapid response, and nationwide coverage.
Industry response has been positive. Cassidy DeLine, CEO of Linea Energy, said Ayr’s ability to complete work in weeks, not months, “transforms a process that typically drags on.”
With global grid investments projected to exceed $21 T by 2050, Ayr Energy aims to capture significant market share by modernising procurement, delivery, and ownership of critical grid technologies.
