Belgium, Antwerp: Belgian transmission system operator Elia has opened the Brabo III high-voltage substation, strengthening the electricity network around Antwerp and supporting increased cross-border power flows with the Netherlands.
The facility was officially opened by Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever and Dutch Prime Minister Rob Jetten. The project is designed to improve grid resilience, security of supply and energy cooperation between the neighbouring countries.
Jetten said the substation demonstrates what Belgium and the Netherlands can achieve by working together. “This project shows what we can achieve when we join forces. Let’s make sure we continue working together,” he said.
He added that securing Europe’s own energy supply has become increasingly important. “Brabo III may not have started out with that purpose, but in today’s world it has become an important part of energy security.”
De Wever described the new transmission infrastructure as “a new artery for our industry”, highlighting its role in supporting the Antwerp region and strengthening the reliability of Belgium’s electricity system.
According to Bernard Gustin, CEO of Elia Group, closer links between the Belgian and Dutch grids could make both countries less vulnerable to disruption in international energy markets.
During the opening, Elia and Dutch grid operator TenneT also announced plans for a new cross-border electricity connection between Kinrooi in Belgian Limburg and Maasbracht in the Netherlands.
The Brabo III project forms part of wider efforts to expand transmission capacity and prepare the region’s power system for growing electrification and new energy projects.
