Germany, Saxony-Anhalt: Watson Farley & Williams has advised BW ESS Holding GmbH on the acquisition of a major battery energy storage system project in Germany from Zelos Energy Developments GmbH.
BW ESS first invested in the project in 2024 and took full ownership earlier this year.
The project is located in the Mansfeld-Südharz region of Saxony-Anhalt, near the Klostermansfeld substation. It has a planned capacity of 1,000 MW and storage capacity of up to 5,700 MWh.
Once completed, the facility is expected to become Germany’s largest battery storage project and one of the largest in Europe, with total storage capacity of 5.7 GWh. According to the project information, it could supply around three million German households with electricity for at least four hours.
BW ESS is a global energy storage owner-operator. The company has more than 540 MWh of operating battery storage assets, around 11 GWh under construction and a development pipeline of several gigawatts.
The WFW Germany Energy team advising BW ESS was led by Hamburg Corporate Partner Christian R. Schindler, with support from lawyers across corporate, regulatory and tax matters.
Schindler said the transaction reflects the scale and strategic importance of battery storage in Europe’s energy transition. He added that the project highlights investor interest in storage technologies as renewable generation increases, as well as the attractiveness of the German market for long-term infrastructure investment.
