UK, Scotland: Chinese wind turbine manufacturer Ming Yang Smart Energy plans to invest up to $2 B to build a large-scale wind turbine manufacturing facility in Scotland, a project expected to create around 1,500 jobs and strengthen the UK’s clean energy supply chain.
The investment comes as Britain accelerates efforts to expand renewable power generation to meet climate targets and promote domestic green industry growth.
Ming Yang said the development will be carried out in three phases. The first, worth around $1 B (£750 M), will establish production facilities for turbine blades and nacelles, with manufacturing expected to begin by late 2028.
A second phase will adapt the site to support the floating offshore wind sector, while a third phase will add capacity for control systems, electronics, and other key components.
The company has identified several potential sites, with Ardersier Port near Inverness currently its preferred location.
If realised, the project would mark one of the largest Chinese investments in the UK’s renewable energy sector and could provide a major boost to Scotland’s role in the global offshore wind industry.
