USA, New York, New York: Consolidated Edison plans to place 28 new substations in service by 2035 across the territories of its two electric utilities, Consolidated Edison Company of New York (CECONY) and Orange & Rockland Utilities (O&R).
The expanded substation programme forms part of approximately $37.2 B in planned investment in the CECONY and O&R distribution networks. Earlier this year, ConEd had said it expected to build 22 new substations by 2035, meaning the latest plan adds six substations to the programme.
The investments are intended to support growing electricity demand and increased electrification across ConEd’s service territories, in line with New York City and state energy and climate policies.
CECONY and O&R together provide electricity to more than nine million people, covering New York City’s five boroughs, parts or all of four downstate New York counties and areas of three northern New Jersey counties.
The announcement came alongside ConEd’s second-quarter results. Combined electricity sales revenue from CECONY and O&R exceeded $3.1 B in the three months ending 30 June 2026, compared with $2.78 B in the same period a year earlier.
