United Arab Emirates, Dubai: Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) commissioned 793 new 11 kV substations during the first six months of 2026, expanding the emirate’s medium-voltage distribution network to support continued residential, commercial and economic growth.
Construction and associated works required 624,340 man-hours, with DEWA reporting that the projects were completed in accordance with its quality, efficiency and safety requirements.
Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, Managing Director and CEO of DEWA, said the expansion is intended to keep pace with the development of new residential areas, commercial centres, investment projects and business hubs across Dubai.
The utility is also continuing to introduce new technologies as it expands its electricity infrastructure and seeks to maintain network performance.
DEWA reported average customer minutes lost of 0.82 minutes per customer annually, while electricity transmission and distribution losses stood at 2 %.
Following the latest additions, DEWA’s network includes 47,723 medium-voltage substations operating at 11 kV and 6.6 kV, according to Rashid bin Humaidan, Executive Vice President of Distribution Power. The utility also operates 53 substations at 33 kV.
The commissioning programme reflects the continuing expansion of Dubai’s distribution infrastructure as electricity requirements grow alongside new construction and investment across the emirate.
