Portugal, Grândola: E-REDES has commissioned the new Arregota Nova substation following a $4.6 M (€4 M) investment aimed at improving electricity supply in Portugal’s Alentejo region.
The HV/MV facility has an initial installed capacity of 20 MVA and will directly support electricity supply to the town of Grândola and its industrial area. Around 3,700 residential customers and 46 business customers are expected to benefit from the new infrastructure.
Work began in June 2022 and was completed in June 2026. The project included construction of the substation, a new high-voltage line and six medium-voltage feeder connections linking the facility to the existing network.
Developed according to E-REDES’ standard design, the substation uses a modular and expandable configuration supported by digital technology. The facility is automated and can be monitored remotely.
E-REDES said the project will improve both quality of service and security of supply along the Alentejo coast. It will also provide backup supply capacity for the neighbouring municipalities of Alcácer do Sal and Santiago do Cacém.
The modular design allows the facility to be expanded in the future as electricity consumption in the region increases.
