Eight major European Transmission System Operators (TSOs) have come together to form the TSO Innovation Alliance, a new initiative aimed at accelerating the development of innovative technologies to strengthen the resilience and performance of Europe’s electricity networks.
The Alliance’s first joint focus will be on “Weather and Grid Resilience,” launching an innovation challenge to identify startups offering solutions to mitigate climate-related risks and support the integration of variable renewable energy sources.
This cross-border initiative highlights the growing importance of technological collaboration in ensuring energy security and competitiveness in Europe. As electricity grids become increasingly central to both economic progress and climate goals, the Alliance aims to treat innovation as a strategic lever to meet shared net-zero targets and reduce reliance on external technologies and suppliers.
Founding members include Terna (Italy), RTE (France), Swissgrid (Switzerland), Elia Group (Belgium and Germany), TenneT (Netherlands), Red Eléctrica (Spain), and Amprion (Germany). These TSOs share common priorities and face similar challenges, which the Alliance seeks to address through coordinated research, resource sharing, and joint development of new solutions.
The Alliance was formalised with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), marking a collective step toward shaping a more resilient, innovative, and sustainable electricity system in Europe.
