Ireland: EirGrid has provided an update on its Fingal to East Meath Grid Reinforcement Project, a major electricity infrastructure upgrade planned for one of Ireland’s fastest-growing regions.

The project includes the development of a new transmission interface substation west of Swords, which will be connected to a substation in East Meath. The upgrade is intended to improve electricity supply reliability for homes, schools and businesses across north county Dublin and east Meath.

A central part of the project is the proposed Ward 400 kV Substation and associated future connecting circuits. Following public consultation and technical assessments, EirGrid identified Zone 1 as the preferred area for the substation. After further site investigations and a multi-criteria assessment process, Site E was selected as the best-performing option.

EirGrid said the decision considered environmental, technical and economic factors, alongside feedback received during a five-week public consultation held in late 2024.

According to the company, electricity demand in the region continues to grow, making reinforcement of the transmission network increasingly important. EirGrid also stated that community engagement will continue throughout the next phases of the project, including consultation on future route corridors and connecting infrastructure.

Public information events and an online webinar are planned to present the latest developments and gather additional local feedback.
