Germany: EnBW Energie Baden-Württemberg has signed a 15-year power purchase agreement (PPA) with Google to supply 100 MW of clean electricity from the He Dreiht offshore wind farm in the German North Sea.

The agreement supports Google’s ambition to operate on 24/7 carbon-free energy by 2030, matching every hour of electricity use with an equivalent amount of carbon-free power on the grid. Electricity from EnBW’s offshore wind portfolio will contribute directly to this target while strengthening the utility’s role in long-term, tailored energy supply solutions.

He Dreiht, currently under construction, is expected to become one of Europe’s largest offshore wind projects, with a total capacity of 960 MW. Most of the output has already been secured through long-term PPAs, with discussions ongoing for the remaining capacity.

Peter Heydecker, EnBW board member responsible for sustainable generation infrastructure, said the agreement sends a strong signal for the transformation of the energy market. He noted that customised PPA solutions allow large-scale renewable projects to support both industrial decarbonisation and the digital economy.

Google relies on continuous and reliable electricity to operate its global network of data centres, which underpin AI and other data-intensive technologies. Adam Elman, Google’s Director of Sustainability EMEA, said that meeting growing demand for AI infrastructure requires direct investment in new energy generation. The PPA with EnBW will bring additional wind power online in Germany while supporting the wider transition to a cleaner electricity system.

Separately, EnBW recently halted development of the Mona and Morgan offshore wind projects in the UK, which were planned as joint ventures with Jera Nex in the Irish Sea.
