Canada, Alberta, Calgary: Enmax has completed and energised its new Substation No. 1 in downtown Calgary, replacing the city’s first substation after more than a century of service.
The $240 M project is Enmax’s largest lifecycle replacement to date. The new facility takes over much of the downtown electrical load from the original Substation No. 1, which was first electrified in 1912 and helped power Calgary’s early streetlights and streetcar system.
According to Greg Retzer, Executive Vice President of Enmax Power, the project was completed on time and on budget. He said the substation supplies around half of downtown Calgary.
Enmax said the new facility improves reliability, operational safety and space efficiency. The modern equipment operates more quietly and safely than the older systems and uses a more compact design. The substation also includes technology to manage loads, monitor potential issues and improve arc-blast protection.
Retzer said a major part of Enmax’s capital programme will continue to focus on replacing ageing infrastructure while keeping pace with Calgary’s growth.
Alberta Minister of Affordability and Utilities RJ Sigurdson said reliable and affordable power is essential to support the city’s development and rising electricity demand.
Calgary Mayor Jeromy Farkas said Substation No. 1 has been part of the city’s story for more than 100 years, quietly supporting homes, businesses, hospitals and the downtown core.
