The European Commission has officially designated 235 cross-border energy infrastructure projects as Projects of Common Interest (PCIs) and Projects of Mutual Interest (PMIs), marking a critical step in the continent’s mission to modernise its power systems. This new list, which replaces the previous 1st Union List, focuses heavily on electricity, with nearly half of the projects (113) dedicated to electricity transmission, offshore wind integration, and smart electricity grids. These projects are intended to eliminate cross-border bottlenecks and strengthen the overall resilience of the Energy Union.

These infrastructure developments will require substantial upgrades to switchgear and substation technology, particularly in the realm of 420 kV and above. The Commission will launch the 2026 Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) call at the end of April, allowing project developers to apply for EU financing. Technical specifications for these interconnectors will likely drive demand for high-performance circuit breakers and protection relays capable of handling the complexities of bi-directional power flow and high-frequency stability.
