India, Goa, Ponda: A major fire broke out on 2 October in the afternoon at the 33 kV high-tension electricity substation located at Deepnagar, Curti, causing widespread disruption to power supply in the area.
According to Power Minister Sudin Dhavlikar, a short circuit triggered the blaze, which quickly spread through the substation’s equipment. Thick black smoke billowed into the sky and was visible from several kilometres away, alarming residents in the surrounding areas.
The fire resulted in large parts of Curti and nearby localities losing electricity for several hours. Local authorities and power department teams worked on an urgent basis to restore supply, and power was eventually brought back after repair and safety checks.
Minister Dhavlikar noted that immediate steps had been taken to contain the incident and ensure the grid was stabilised. While supply has been restored, further technical inspections are expected to assess the extent of the damage at the substation.
