Germany, Dormagen: German police are investigating a suspected attempt to sabotage an electrical substation in Dormagen, between Cologne and Düsseldorf, after a passerby discovered a suspicious object near the facility.

Police said someone appeared to have deliberately tried to cause a short circuit. Investigators have also received a letter claiming responsibility, although no further details about its contents have been released.

Authorities have not yet confirmed the nature of the object. Police in Neuss said it could potentially be an explosive device, but specialists are examining whether it was capable of damaging the substation.

The Dormagen discovery follows a similar incident two days earlier at a substation in Bergheim, west of Cologne. Investigators found six launch devices in a nearby field that were apparently intended to fire a wire over power lines using pyrotechnic means. The wire is believed to have become entangled with the line and caused a short circuit.

Investigators are examining mobile-phone data and DNA evidence recovered from the devices. The Bergheim incident has been described by investigators as a deliberate attack.

It also follows an earlier suspected sabotage incident at the Preilack substation in Brandenburg, where several improvised explosive devices were discovered and power lines were damaged, briefly interrupting service.

The three incidents have increased concern over the security of Germany’s power infrastructure, although investigations into the circumstances and possible connections between the cases are continuing.
