Spain, Gran Canaria: Red Eléctrica de España (REE) has moved forward with a major land expropriation process in southern Gran Canaria as part of the rollout of a new 66 kV Mogán substation. Backed by a budget of $4.6 M (€4 M), the project aims to strengthen electricity supply in one of the island’s main economic zones through a double-busbar GIS-type installation.
The Directorate General of Energy has issued a declaration of public utility, allowing REE to take urgent possession of both private and public land required for the development. This step enables the company to secure space for the substation and associated infrastructure.
The move directly affects several large landowners linked to the tourism sector, including Puerto Rico SA, SA Investaurito, and Unión Guanche Catalana. Parts of their land will be subject to easements and safety zones to accommodate the new power line route.
Public infrastructure is also impacted. The Gran Canaria Island Council will lose full access to waterways in ravines such as Mogán, Tauro and El Cura, while the Mogán City Council faces disruption to key local roads.
Alongside the main project, a second contract worth $167,000 (€143,000) covers supporting infrastructure, including undergrounding overhead lines and installing transformer substations. This phase also relies on legal provisions to secure land access.
Authorities have opened a 30-day consultation period for affected parties to review plans and file objections before works proceed.
