UK, Scotland, Redshaw: SP Energy Networks has received planning approval to build a new substation at Redshaw near Douglas, South Lanarkshire. The project aims to strengthen Scotland’s electricity transmission network and enable more renewable energy to reach homes, schools and businesses.
The company shared detailed proposals with the local community earlier this year before submitting its application to South Lanarkshire Council in June. The new substation will play a key role in meeting growing demand as the network in southern Scotland approaches full capacity. Around 2 GW of new renewable energy is expected to connect to the grid in the area in the coming years.
“The consent for Redshaw marks a major milestone in our efforts to enhance the electricity transmission network in the south of Scotland,” said Andrew Hutchison, Environmental Planning Manager at SP Energy Networks. “This project is part of a wider investment programme vital for improving energy security and supporting net-zero targets.”
The Redshaw site will include two 400 kV gas-insulated switchgear (GIS) buildings, four 360 MVA transformers, and associated infrastructure such as access roads, fencing, and a distribution substation.
Construction is expected to begin later this year, pending final approvals, with completion targeted by the end of 2031.
