UK, Scotland, New Deer: SSEN Transmission has awarded a major contract to BAM and Siemens Energy for the delivery of the new 400 kV Greens substation near New Deer in Aberdeenshire.

The project is an important part of SSEN Transmission’s $39 B (£29 B) programme to strengthen the electricity network across the north of Scotland. The new substation will help connect more renewable energy to homes and businesses throughout the UK while supporting energy security and clean power targets.

The contract signing marks a significant step forward ahead of the start of main construction later this year. It is also the first onshore substation contract awarded by SSEN Transmission under the Accelerated Strategic Transmission Investment (ASTI) framework.

As part of the works, local firms across the north-east will benefit from employment, training and supply chain opportunities. Aberdeenshire company David Smith Contractors Ltd will support the construction through its newly formed business, Power Partners Scotland Ltd, delivering specialist civil engineering and groundworks.

The project will also leave a long-term legacy in the area. Through an agreement with Springfield Homes, 69 new homes will be built in Turriff. The homes will first support the project workforce before becoming available to local residents, including affordable, social and private housing options.

More than $670,000 (£500,000) in community benefit funding is also expected to be provided during the lifetime of the project, alongside investment in apprenticeships, placements and partnerships with schools, colleges and universities.

Paul Cooley, Director of Onshore Capital Delivery at SSEN Transmission, said: “This project will deliver real benefits across the north-east, supporting jobs, skills and opportunities for local businesses, many of which are already playing a key role.”
