The Netherlands, Limburg: Dutch infrastructure specialist Heijmans has officially secured and commenced a $226 M (€194 M) contract to modernise the 380 kV HV substation in Maasbracht, Limburg. Commissioned by national grid operator TenneT, the project is a vital component in strengthening the regional and international electricity network.

Although construction activities have already begun, the contract has now been formally finalised. Heijmans was involved from the early design stage, collaborating with TenneT through a construction team model to ensure predictability and alignment throughout the project. Completion is slated for 2029.

The project aims to significantly enhance the high-voltage grid’s capacity in the Limburg region. Key works include the construction of a new gas-insulated switchgear (GIS) installation and the laying of underground high-voltage cables. Notably, much of the construction will be carried out using emission-free equipment, in line with Heijmans’ sustainability ambitions.

The existing substation was first commissioned in the 1960s. It will be dismantled once the new infrastructure is operational. Maasbracht plays a pivotal role in the national energy landscape, forming the final link in the 380 kV ring between Eindhoven and Dodewaard. The site also acts as a crucial junction in the European electricity grid, with direct connections to Belgium and Germany and a tie-in to the nearby Claus power station.

As the Netherlands experiences surging electricity demand driven by decarbonisation efforts and decentralised power generation, such upgrades are essential. The Maasbracht project exemplifies Heijmans’ long-term strategy to address complex infrastructure challenges, including the energy transition, climate adaptation, and digitalisation of the power system.
