Canada, Alberta, La Corey: Hitachi Energy will deliver the grid connection infrastructure for the Marguerite Lake Compressed Air Energy Storage (CAES) project, one of Canada’s major long-duration energy storage developments.

The project is being developed by Cache Power, Federation Group and EllisDon near La Corey, Alberta. Once operational, it is expected to provide up to 640 MW of generation capacity and approximately 48 hours of energy storage capability.

Marguerite Lake is designed to support grid reliability and flexibility as Alberta continues to expand renewable energy generation. The facility will store surplus electricity during periods of lower demand and deliver it back to the grid when demand is higher.

The project will use solution-mined salt caverns located around 1,100 m underground within the Lotsberg salt formation. These geological conditions are considered suitable for large-scale compressed air energy storage.

Hitachi Energy will provide the critical substation infrastructure that will connect the storage facility to the Alberta Interconnected Electric System (AIES). Its scope includes the design, engineering, supply and construction of the substation.

According to the project partners, the grid connection will serve as the gateway between the storage facility and Alberta’s power system, supporting the reliable integration of long-duration energy storage.

The project is expected to strengthen grid resilience, improve energy flexibility and support greater integration of renewable energy across Alberta.
