Canada, Ontario: Hydro One Networks Inc. has submitted two leave-to-construct applications to the Ontario Energy Board (OEB) seeking approval for the Northeast Power Line and the Longwood to Lakeshore Transmission Line projects.
The Northeast Power Line involves the construction of a single-circuit 500-kV transmission line between Hanmer Transformer Station in Greater Sudbury and Mississagi Transformer Station near Wharncliffe. The project is expected to improve electricity transfer capability between northeast and northwest Ontario by around 900 MW.
The transmission line is estimated to cost approximately $1.8 B and is scheduled for completion in 2029.
The second project, the Longwood to Lakeshore Transmission Line, will also consist of a single-circuit 500-kV line. It will connect Longwood Transformer Station in the Municipality of Strathroy-Caradoc with Lakeshore Transformer Station in the Municipality of Lakeshore.
This project represents an investment of around $1.2 B and is expected to deliver approximately 550 MW of electricity to southwest Ontario, supporting local employment as well as the region’s agri-business and manufacturing sectors. Completion is targeted for 2030.
Under Hydro One’s First Nation Equity Partnership Model, nearby First Nations will have the opportunity to invest in a 50 % equity stake in the transmission line portion of both projects. Hydro One stated it will continue working with participating First Nations during the planning, development, and construction stages.
