South Korea: Hyosung Heavy Industries aims to secure 25 % of the US high-voltage gas circuit breaker market by 2030, expanding its presence beyond transformers into locally manufactured circuit breakers.
Production of 72.5 kV to 800 kV gas circuit breakers is scheduled to begin in October through Hyosung HICO Breaker, the company’s joint venture with US power infrastructure contractor Quanta Services.
The venture will use Quanta Services’ switchgear manufacturing facility in Pennsylvania. Semi-finished products will be produced at Hyosung’s Changwon plant and shipped to the United States for final assembly.
“Demand for both transformers and circuit breakers continues to increase, and circuit breaker demand has recently been growing faster than expected,” a Hyosung Heavy Industries official said.
The company expects local assembly to provide access to Quanta Services’ EPC network, improving opportunities in U.S. substation and transmission projects while shortening supply chains.
Strong North American demand has already supported Hyosung’s results. The industrial division recorded a 20.2 % operating margin in the second quarter, while the US share of revenue increased to 38%.
Hyosung also raised its full-year order target from $5.8 B (8.4 T won) to $8.4 B (12 T won). The US accounted for 71 % of industrial division orders secured during the first half of 2026.
“The US market now accounts for more than 50 % of our total order backlog,” a company official said.
Hyosung is also investing more than $200 M in its Memphis transformer facility, which is expected to become the country’s largest ultra-high-voltage transformer production site after expansion is completed in 2028.
