USA, Oregon, Gilliam County: Iberdrola is building its first large-scale battery energy storage project in the United States, expanding its storage investments into the US market.

The Shutler project will be located in Gilliam County, Oregon, and will have an installed capacity of 41 MW and a storage capacity of 82 MWh.

The battery will support the reliability of the electricity system in the north-western United States, along the Pacific coast. In this region, Avangrid, Iberdrola’s US subsidiary, already has 3,000 MW of generation capacity.

The project forms part of Iberdrola’s wider strategy to develop solutions that help integrate renewable energy into the grid and improve system resilience as electricity demand continues to grow.

Shutler will store electricity during periods of low consumption or high renewable generation and release it when needed. This will help optimise the energy system and support a better real-time balance between electricity supply and demand.

Battery storage is becoming increasingly important as electrification expands and more renewable generation is added to power systems. Projects such as Shutler can help manage variability, reduce pressure on the grid and improve flexibility.

The project is scheduled to begin operation in 2027. It will be located close to other Avangrid renewable energy facilities that are already operating or under development in the area.
