Australia, Victoria / New South Wales: Iberdrola Australia has been selected to develop the VNI West transmission project, a major new interconnector that will link the states of Victoria and New South Wales. The project marks Iberdrola’s entry into Australia’s transmission sector and reflects the country’s growing need for stronger, more flexible grid infrastructure.

VNI West will include a 240-km, 500 kV double-circuit transmission line designed to increase bidirectional transfer capacity by up to 3.5 GW. The line will support the connection of new renewable energy zones, improve electricity flows between the two states, and help stabilise prices by reducing network congestion.

As the winning bidder, Iberdrola will work with VicGrid, Victoria’s government-owned planning body, during the project’s first phase. Together they will develop engineering designs, grid studies, cost estimates, and environmental and cultural heritage assessments. The partnership will also engage local communities and landholders along the proposed route.

Once this phase is completed, Iberdrola will submit a full proposal to build, own, and operate the transmission line. Construction is expected to be completed by 2030, subject to regulatory approvals.

The project is considered a key element in Australia’s broader plan to decarbonise its electricity system and replace retiring coal generation. Strengthening the interconnection between Victoria and New South Wales is seen as essential for integrating new solar, wind, and storage projects.
