USA, Iowa / Wisconsin: The Cardinal-Hickory Creek transmission project is planned as a 193 km, 345 kV transmission line connecting north-east Iowa with south-western Wisconsin.

The project is estimated at $500 M and is being developed by American Transmission Company, ITC Midwest and Dairyland Power Cooperative.

The line will run from the Hickory Creek Substation in Dubuque County, Iowa, to the Cardinal Substation in Middleton, Wisconsin. It will also include construction of the new 345 / 138 kV Hill Valley Substation near Montfort, Wisconsin.

Additional work is planned at the Cardinal, Eden, Nelson Dewey, Wyoming Valley, Hickory Creek, Turkey River and Stoneman substations.

The project also includes a crossing of the Mississippi River and is intended to reduce transmission congestion, improve grid efficiency and stability, and support additional renewable generation connections in the Midwest.

American Transmission Company will own and construct the section between Hill Valley and Cardinal and will also build the Hill Valley Substation. ITC Midwest will manage construction of the section between Hickory Creek and Hill Valley.

According to the project information provided, construction was expected to begin in 2021, with the line scheduled to enter service in 2023.
