UK, England, Cheshire: Ipsum Group has secured four 132 kV Major Projects contracts from SP Energy Networks (SPEN), forming part of a multi-million-dollar programme of substation and overhead powerline works aligned with the government’s Clean Power 2030 ambition.
The projects will be delivered by Ipsum’s Power Division during 2026 and will involve upgrading auxiliary systems and associated infrastructure at several sites across Cheshire. Works are set to begin in March at Ince near Elton and will conclude in Runcorn in the fourth quarter of 2026.
At Ince, the largest and longest of the four contracts, specialist teams will carry out the 132 kV Grid Transformer T1 and T2 replacement works. Similar activities will also commence in March at Radway Green near Alsager, where the project scope includes site reinforcement and replacement of the 132 kV Grid Transformer T1.
The Radway Green works are due for completion in the summer, which will coincide with the start of another contract at the former ICI Wade site near Northwich. There, Ipsum will deliver a 132 kV switchgear modernisation scheme. Further modernisation works will follow at Percival Lane in Runcorn, where SF6 132 kV switching isolator upgrades are scheduled to start in summer and finish in autumn.
Commenting on the awards, Lee Maxwell, Managing Director at Ipsum, said the contracts highlight the strength of the company’s SPEN team and its commitment to sustainability. He added that Ipsum is proud to support SP Energy Networks in helping the UK progress towards a cleaner and more secure power system by 2030.
