Germany: The Jasmund offshore substation for German transmission system operator 50Hertz has reached a major construction milestone, with both its topside and jacket transferred onto transport barges for upcoming installation in the Baltic Sea. The work is being delivered by the HSI consortium, comprising HSM Offshore Energy, Smulders, and Iv, under a full EPCIC contract.

The 4,500-t topside, measuring 48x33x17.5 m, was constructed at HSM Offshore Energy’s Stormpolder yard in the Netherlands. Its matching jacket structure, also weighing around 4,500 t and rising 72 m, was manufactured at the Smulders facility in Vlissingen. The load-out required detailed engineering studies to ensure safe structural support and transport stability, including the design of a customised grillage system.

Jasmund is the first of three offshore substations being built by the consortium for 50Hertz. Once installed, the substation will provide 300 MW of grid connection capacity, delivering renewable electricity sufficient for approximately 260,000 households. It will act as the main grid link for the Windanker offshore wind farm, located northeast of the island of Rügen.

Earlier in the year, the HSI partnership completed topside rollout and transformer lifting activities at Stormpolder, marking the first substation platform and jacket produced within the consortium. The current load-out milestone moves the project a step closer to offshore installation and commissioning.
