USA, Tennessee, Jackson: Jackson Energy Authority crews have begun dismantling the ageing Passmore Substation in Jackson, Tennessee, as part of a major upgrade to strengthen the city’s power infrastructure.
The work is being carried out near live high-voltage lines and involves removing old substation equipment piece by piece. According to JEA lineman Joshua Gabert, crews were working around a 46 kV line while transferring supply to 12 kV distribution lines.
The project includes the removal of a 24-m (80-ft) tower and other heavy infrastructure at the site near Black and Decker. The existing substation is being taken down to make way for new equipment that will increase JEA’s ability to deliver electricity to homes, businesses and critical services.
The upgraded facility is intended to support Jackson’s continued growth and improve the reliability of local power supply. Gabert said maintaining electricity for essential services such as hospitals and traffic lights is part of the importance of the work.
The substation currently includes one large transformer that steps voltage down from 46 kV to 12 kV for distribution to local neighbourhoods and the wider community. According to Gabert, the rebuilt substation is expected to include two transformers, increasing capacity at the site.
Utility officials said the investment is aimed at ensuring Jackson has the electrical infrastructure needed for future demand.
The project highlights the role of substation upgrades in supporting urban growth, reliability and the safe distribution of electricity across local communities.
