USA, North Dakota, Bismarck: The North Dakota Public Service Commission has granted final approval for the Jamestown to Ellendale high-voltage transmission line, known as JETx.
The project, proposed by Otter Tail Power and MDU Resources, is intended to improve the reliability of the regional electricity grid in eastern North Dakota.
The planned transmission line will run for about 145 km (90 mi) through Dickey, LaMoure and Stutsman counties. It will include towers around 45 m (150 ft) tall along the approved route.
The project has attracted opposition from some local landowners, who have raised concerns over the route and its impact. A legal challenge connected to the transmission line is currently before the North Dakota Supreme Court.
The court heard oral arguments in the case on 23 June, but has not yet issued a decision.
Despite the ongoing legal challenge, the commission’s approval marks a major regulatory step forward for the project. Supporters say the line is needed to strengthen grid reliability and support the movement of electricity across the region.
The JETx project now moves ahead with its state permit in place, although the outcome of the pending court case may still affect future project developments.
