Kenya, Nairobi: Kenya Power is investing $5.9 M (Ksh 765 M) in two new substations in Kwale and Kilifi counties to increase network capacity and improve electricity supply reliability.

The Bomani 132/33 kV substation in Kilifi County, being developed at a cost of $3.5 (Ksh 455 M), is nearing completion. It will serve growing electricity demand in Kikambala, Vipingo, Kanamai and Mtwapa.

Customers in these areas are currently supplied from the Kilifi and Bamburi 132/33 kV substations, where available capacity is becoming increasingly constrained as industrial and commercial activity expands.

In Kwale County, Kenya Power is completing a 33/11 kV substation representing an investment of $2.4 M (Ksh 310 M). The facility will include four power lines serving Kwale County headquarters as well as Kinango, Tiwi and Kombani.

The new substation is expected to relieve the existing Diani substation and provide additional supply points, improving network reliability in the area.

Kenya Power said it is also investing in other substations across the country as part of efforts to strengthen grid resilience, power quality and smart-grid capabilities.

During the financial year ended June 2026, the utility connected 411,710 new customers, bringing its total customer base to 10.4 million. Electricity sales increased by 161.7 GWh during the year.
