UK, England, Lancashire: National Grid has selected Linxon to support an extension of the 400 kV Middleton substation in Lancashire as part of wider transmission network reinforcement works.
The project is intended to create capacity for new customer connections and support growing electricity demand in the region. Linxon’s initial scope covers engineering activities and the early procurement of long lead-time equipment for a 400 kV SF₆-free gas-insulated switchgear substation.
The GIS will use EconiQ technology together with associated systems. Subject to National Grid issuing a further notice to proceed, later phases are expected to include construction, installation, testing and commissioning.
A new GIS hall will be constructed next to the existing facility, increasing the site’s ability to accommodate additional connections. These will include two battery energy storage projects.
Linxon said the project is intended to contribute to infrastructure capable of meeting future requirements and supporting the transition to a low-carbon energy system.
For Linxon, the selection adds to its work on high-voltage substation projects in the United Kingdom and other markets. The Middleton project combines network expansion with a move to SF₆-free 400 kV GIS technology, while the planned battery storage connections are expected to contribute to a more flexible and resilient transmission network in the region.
