UK / The Netherlands: National Grid Ventures will launch a targeted consultation on proposed updates to LionLink, a planned subsea electricity interconnector between Great Britain and the Netherlands.
LionLink would connect to a Dutch offshore wind farm and deliver up to 2 GW of electricity, enough to power around 2.5 million homes. The targeted consultation will run from 7 July to 5 August 2026.
The consultation follows LionLink’s statutory consultation, held between January and March 2026, during which almost 900 pieces of feedback were received. This input has been reviewed alongside ongoing engineering, environmental and technical assessments.
The new consultation will focus on localised changes rather than the full project. Proposed updates include an alternative landfall at Walberswick, positioned further from the village to reduce potential impacts on residents, public footpaths, recreational areas and the local environment.
Other proposed changes include refinements to the construction area at Lymballs Lane near Darsham, including a repositioned temporary haul road, and the inclusion of Benhall Railway Bridge within the project boundary to allow possible restoration or support works for large construction deliveries.
Further refinements to access points and project boundaries along the route are intended to improve construction access, safety and environmental mitigation.
LionLink is also confirming wider updates, including a preferred route for part of the underground cable corridor and reduced proposed construction working hours, with Sunday and Bank Holiday working no longer routine.
Alex Marsh, Project Director for LionLink, said the feedback received earlier this year had helped shape the proposed updates.
The consultation will inform the project ahead of the submission of a Development Consent Order application.
