USA, California, Bay Area: LS Power Grid California has officially started construction on the Power Santa Clara Valley and Power the South Bay transmission projects, marking the occasion with ceremonies in San José and Fremont.
The company is investing around $2 B in three Bay Area transmission developments designed to improve grid reliability, support economic growth and increase access to energy resources across Alameda and Santa Clara counties.
The projects will be able to transmit up to 1,000 MW of electricity, enough to serve around 750,000 homes. They are also expected to create about 300 union construction jobs and generate more than $650 M in local and state tax revenue over the coming decades.
The Power Santa Clara Valley Project will use HVDC technology to connect two new terminals in San José through a new 19-km (12-mi) underground line. The system is intended to give California’s grid operator greater flexibility in managing changing electricity demand.
Meanwhile, the Power the South Bay Project will add a new 19-km (12-mi), 230-kV transmission line linking Fremont and Santa Clara through a mix of overhead and underground infrastructure.
Since 2023, the Power the Bay projects have contributed more than $150,000 to local organisations. LS Power Grid California also made a $2.5 M payment to the City of Fremont to support construction on city-owned land and help fund a new community centre in Central Park.
The projects were selected by the California ISO through competitive processes in 2023.
