India / Middle East: Larsen & Toubro (L&T) announced on 24 February that its Power Transmission & Distribution (PT&D) division has secured a new set of major EPC contracts in India and across the Middle East, aimed at strengthening electricity grid infrastructure.
The company defines “major” orders as those valued between $550 M and $1.1 B.
In India, L&T has been awarded a contract to design, supply and build two 220 kV gas insulated substations (GIS) in the Durgapur–Raniganj–Asansol industrial corridor in West Bengal. The scope of work also includes related transmission line sections equipped with advanced conductors and multi-circuit towers.
These projects are part of ongoing grid modernisation efforts and are expected to ensure a stable voltage profile while improving the reliability of power supply for infrastructure and industrial users in the region.
In the Middle East, the company has secured turnkey contracts from leading utilities for the construction of five substations and more than 250 km of transmission lines across three countries. The projects involve grid systems with capacities of up to 500 kV. One of the contracts also covers the supply and installation of a 400 kV underground cable system.
L&T noted that increasing electricity demand, changes in the energy mix and initiatives focused on energy security are driving grid investments in many economies.
