Minnesota, Becker: Minnesota Power and Great River Energy have officially broken ground on the Northland Reliability Project, a major transmission line designed to enhance grid stability across northern and central Minnesota.
The project, stretching approximately 290 km (180 mi) from Grand Rapids to St. Cloud, is expected to improve the reliability and resilience of the regional power network as demand for clean and dependable electricity continues to grow.
Approved by the Public Utilities Commission in January and one of 18 projects endorsed by the regional grid operator in July 2022, the initiative represents a key investment in Minnesota’s energy infrastructure.
State officials joined utility leaders at the groundbreaking ceremony in Becker on Wednesday, marking the start of what Minnesota Power describes as one of the most significant transmission upgrades in decades.
The project carries an estimated cost of over $1 B and is scheduled to be operational by 2030. Once complete, it will form a vital link in the state’s transmission system, supporting both renewable energy integration and grid resilience against extreme weather events.
