UK: National Grid has appointed 13 contractors to carry out substation construction and upgrade works across the UK under a new dynamic market framework.
The framework is now live and open-ended, meaning additional companies can still join. However, the initial selected firms are now in a strong position to compete for a major pipeline of upcoming substation projects.
Laing O’Rourke was the standout winner, securing positions across all three workstreams: EPC delivery, mechanical and electrical (M&E) installation, and major civils works.
For the top-tier EPC substation construction lot, which covers turnkey projects typically valued at over $23.5 M (£20 M) on live 400 kV sites, five firms were selected: BAM Nuttall, Costain, Laing O’Rourke, Siemens Energy and Skanska.
The M&E installation workstream, focused on smaller upgrades and extensions, was awarded to Kirby Group Engineering, Laing O’Rourke, Morson Projects, OCU Utility Services and Siemens Energy.
Nine companies were appointed to the major civils lot for packages above $5.8 M (£5 M). This group includes BAM Nuttall, Costain, Galliford Try, Laing O’Rourke, Skanska, Alpha Construction, Amalgamated Construction, Trant Engineering and Tudorborne.
The dynamic framework was first announced in February as part of National Grid’s effort to improve procurement efficiency and speed up delivery of essential infrastructure.
It will be used by National Grid Electricity Transmission and National Grid Electricity Distribution, with contractors competing for individual projects as they are released.
