Nepal, Kathmandu: The Millennium Challenge Account Nepal (MCA-Nepal) has completed construction of an 18 km section of a cross-border transmission line connecting the 400 kV New Butwal Substation with the Nepal-India border.
The section forms part of the MCC Nepal Compact and was completed within the planned timeframe after the Ministry of Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation requested that construction be expedited.
MCA-Nepal said the project is intended to strengthen Nepal’s transmission network and expand cross-border electricity connectivity with India.
With construction of the Nepal-side section complete, MCA-Nepal has fulfilled its construction obligations for this part of the cross-border line. Commissioning will depend on the remaining permits and regulatory approvals required for cross-border electricity transmission.
The 18 km link forms part of a wider power transmission project that includes approximately 315 km of high-voltage transmission lines and three substations. The programme also includes technical assistance for the Electricity Regulatory Commission and the Nepal Electricity Authority.
MCA-Nepal Executive Director Khadga Bahadur Bista said the agency will now focus on completing the remaining work needed to energise the line and support further electricity cooperation between Nepal and India.
The broader project is intended to improve electricity availability and reliability, reinforce Nepal’s transmission system and support future power generation and cross-border electricity trade.
