USA, Pennsylvania, Littleston: Met-Ed has confirmed that a new power substation serving the Littlestown area is under construction and will be energised before next summer.

The announcement follows a series of power failures in June 2025, when a major transformer breakdown at the existing Germantown substation left residents without electricity for four days during the first heatwave of the season.

According to Met-Ed’s parent company, FirstEnergy, the new facility is part of the East Germantown-Germantown Reliability Project, which aims to strengthen the region’s power infrastructure and ensure more stable service in the future. The project is scheduled for completion by the end of March 2026.

Company officials say the new substation will significantly reduce the risk of lengthy blackouts by providing greater redundancy and resilience in the network. The upgrade is intended to better handle demand during extreme weather events, which have been putting increasing strain on older equipment.

Local residents, who endured days without electricity earlier this summer, will be watching closely as the project moves forward. The outage disrupted homes, businesses, and community services, highlighting the importance of investment in reliable infrastructure.

By replacing ageing assets and adding new capacity, the project is expected to safeguard power supply for the Littlestown area well into the future.
