Canada, Alberta, Medicine Hat: Construction of a new $22 M substation in the city’s south-west is due to begin on 1 June, with increased construction traffic expected in the area.

The facility, known as MHS-11, is designed to support growing demand in the city’s southern areas and improve long-term electricity reliability.

The project received approval from the Alberta Utilities Commission in 2025 and is linked with wider power line upgrades. These works will help manage electricity flow from the river valley power complex, through a station near the highway entrance, and then towards the city’s south end.

City officials say the project will ensure supply keeps pace with growth. “As Medicine Hat continues to grow, this new substation will help ensure we can meet increasing electricity demand in the south end while supporting reliable service for customers,” said Rochelle Pancoast, managing director of energy, land and environment.

Planning for the site began in 2019 after earlier proposals were rejected amid local concerns. The substation is now part of a wider long-term grid improvement strategy.

MHS-11 is expected to be operational by spring 2027, with additional substation upgrades planned in the following years as part of a broader modernisation programme.
