Serbia: EDS, Serbia’s state-owned electricity distribution company, has put into operation the 110 / 35 kV Belgrade 44 substation, a key facility built to provide a stable electricity supply for the EXPO 2027 complex in Belgrade.
Located in the Surčin municipality, the substation was completed just one year after construction began. The project required an investment of $27 M (€23 M) and represents an important step in preparing the infrastructure needed for the international exhibition.
The main contractor for the development was Belgrade-based Elnos, while the equipment installed at the site was manufactured by Siemens. The substation is fully automated and can be operated remotely through a dispatch centre.
In addition to the new facility, Serbia’s power grid operator EMS recently launched a $9 M (€8 M) project aimed at providing backup electricity for the EXPO 2027 complex. The work includes upgrading two existing 110 kV single-system transmission lines into dual-system lines. This will secure reserve power for two substations in Surčin that are being developed as part of the exhibition project.
EXPO 2027 is scheduled to take place in Belgrade from 15 March to 15 August. The event, themed “Play for Humanity: Sport and Music for All”, is expected to attract participants from more than 130 countries and draw over four million visitors.
Serbia plans to invest $20.7 B (€17.8 B) in preparations for the exhibition and related infrastructure projects.
