USA, Illinois, Chicago: US grid operator PJM Interconnection has recommended NextEra Energy Transmission and Exelon to deliver a major new power infrastructure project under its 2025 Regional Transmission Expansion Plan.
The proposal centres on an approximately 355 km (220-mi), 765-kilovolt high-voltage transmission line across Pennsylvania and parts of West Virginia. The line would connect to key substations serving homes and businesses, helping deliver safe, reliable and affordable electricity across the region.
Executives from both companies said the project would strengthen grid resilience, improve access to low-cost power and support communities for decades. They stressed a commitment to working closely with local stakeholders along the proposed route to unlock the full benefits of the investment.
The project has also drawn political support. Senator Dave McCormick said strengthening power infrastructure is essential for Pennsylvania to lead future growth in energy and artificial intelligence, helping stabilise electricity prices, create jobs and attract long-term investment.
According to the companies, 765-kV lines can move two to three times more electricity than 500-kV lines while cutting transmission losses by about half. Fewer towers are required, reducing the overall environmental footprint. Improved performance during peak demand periods is also expected to help keep electricity costs down.
The proposed bi-directional line could carry around 7 GW of power, supporting large-scale generation investment in Pennsylvania and West Virginia’s long-term energy plans. PJM’s board is expected to hold its final approval vote in early 2026.
