India: State-owned NTPC plans to develop 30 GW of nuclear power capacity by 2047, according to a statement by Minister of State for Power, Shripad Naik, in a written reply to the Lok Sabha. The plan forms part of the Indian government’s wider objective to reach 100 GW of nuclear capacity by 2047.

As part of this effort, Anu Shakti Vidyut Nigam (ASHVINI), a joint venture between NTPC and the Nuclear Power Corporation of India (NPCIL), is developing a 4×700 MW nuclear power project in the Banswara district of Rajasthan. The project is known as the Mahi Banswara Rajasthan Atomic Power Project (MBRAPP).

According to the minister, current projections indicate that initial testing of the first 700 MW unit is expected to begin in FY 2032–33.

To further advance its nuclear ambitions, NTPC established a wholly owned subsidiary, NTPC Parmanu Urja Nigam (NPUNL), in January 2025. The new entity has been set up to focus exclusively on nuclear power development and to support the company’s long-term capacity targets.

Naik also stated that NTPC has issued an Expression of Interest (EoI) to explore potential options and collaborations with international partners. The move is aimed at identifying suitable technologies, expertise, and partnerships to support future nuclear projects.

Through these steps, NTPC is positioning nuclear power as a key component of India’s long-term energy mix, supporting energy security while contributing to the country’s low-carbon power generation goals.
