Poland, Warsaw: Poland’s transmission system operator PSE has started construction of a new 400-kV transmission line to support the integration of offshore wind energy from the Baltic Sea into the national grid.

The nearly 90-km Choczewo–Gdansk Przyjazn line will be developed in two stages, linking the Choczewo substation in Osieki Leborskie with the Gdansk Przyjazn substation in Zukowo. The first phase is being built by a consortium of SPIE (France) and Elfeko (Poland), selected through a competitive tender, while the contractor for the second section will be chosen in the third quarter of 2025.

The project has received an environmental permit and location decision, with its building permit under review by Pomeranian provincial authorities. Preparatory work is already underway, including material transport and foundation construction, with completion scheduled for 2027.

Once operational, the Choczewo substation will transmit offshore wind power inland through four 400 kV lines, including the Choczewo–Zarnowiec link, now in its final construction phase.

Poland expects its offshore wind capacity to reach 17.9 GW, a cornerstone of its strategy to expand renewable energy and reduce CO₂ emissions. The first electricity from Baltic offshore wind farms is expected to enter the national grid in 2026.
