Russia: Russia’s renewable energy capacity is expected to grow steadily over the next decade, reaching approximately 18.4 GW by 2035, according to GlobalData’s latest report, Russia Power Market Outlook to 2035: Market Trends, Regulations, and Competitive Landscape.

Currently, the country relies heavily on natural gas and nuclear power for system stability and energy security, with thermal generation forming the backbone of the grid. However, state-backed mechanisms are supporting gradual renewable expansion, with structured capacity auctions and domestic content policies encouraging local turbine and solar module production.

Onshore wind capacity is projected to increase from 4.3 GW in 2025 to 10.2 GW in 2035, while solar photovoltaic capacity is expected to grow from 3.1 GW to 5.3 GW, mainly through utility-scale projects in southern and eastern regions. These developments are backed by the Capacity Supply Agreement framework, providing fixed revenue streams for selected renewable projects and reducing exposure to wholesale price fluctuations.

Thermal generation will continue to dominate, with gas-fired capacity rising from 143.5 GW to 151.2 GW by 2035. Coal-fired capacity is expected to decline gradually, oil-fired capacity remains stable, and nuclear power will expand modestly from 26.8 GW to 28.6 GW, maintaining its strategic role in Russia’s centralised energy planning.

Renewable expansion will continue in a controlled, phased manner, focusing on domestic manufacturing, selected regional deployment, and long-term investor certainty. While renewables will steadily grow, natural gas and nuclear generation will remain crucial for maintaining reliable and secure electricity supply across the country.
