Greece, Western Macedonia: RWE and PPC have brought nearly 1 GW of new solar capacity into operation in Northern Greece, following the commissioning of the last of nine solar farms in Western Macedonia.
The projects are organised into three large-scale photovoltaic clusters with a total capacity of 930 MWp, or 884 MWac. According to the companies, the solar farms can generate enough electricity to meet the annual demand of more than 400,000 Greek households.
The projects were developed, built and commissioned by Meton Energy S.A., a joint venture between RWE and PPC. RWE holds a 51 % share, while PPC holds 49 %. The solar farms are located within the boundaries of the former Amynteo open-cast lignite mine, supporting the transformation of a former coal region into a renewable energy generation area.
During construction, the projects created hundreds of direct and indirect jobs. Meton Energy has also agreed with local municipalities to invest in compensatory projects and support community initiatives in the region.
Sopna Sury, CEO of RWE Renewables Europe & Australia, said the commissioning of the three photovoltaic clusters marks an important milestone for the cooperation between RWE and PPC.
The partners are also constructing two additional solar projects in Central Macedonia. The Kotyli and Neo Syrakio solar farms will have a combined capacity of 567 MWp, or 518 MWac.
Commissioning of these projects is expected in 2027. Once operational, they are expected to generate enough electricity to meet the annual demand of more than 240,000 Greek households.
